What happens in a consultation?
Every person is different, we all need a different approach to our health and different health care practitioners to meet our individual needs. It’s really important to do your research and find someone that feels right for you. This is why Holistic Clinical Nutritionists are all different in their approach, in their area of expertise and in their consultation process.
My focus is on eating habits, how they started and how you can change the ones that aren’t benefiting you. Some habits form consciously but many habits are unconscious and you might not be aware of where they came from. These habits, both conscious and unconscious, form what is commonly called your relationship to food. We have a relationship to food because we are connected to our food and it’s connected to us.
How do you have your tea? white with 2 sugars or strong and black? I have mine with no milk because when I first tried tea with milk, it tasted weird! It was watery flavoured milk - gross!! From then on I've always had it black. I also add a bit of cold water because I am impatient and I want to drink it asap, I don’t want to have to wait for it to cool down.
Why do you have your tea that way? Is that the way your dad has it? or is it the way your grandma used to make it for you? or are you lactose intolerant? Do you get jittery if you have it too strong?
How you have your tea is a very basic example but these questions can be applied to anything that you eat or drink (or do) and that is what I explore with you in my consultations.
Questions about veges are my favourite!! There are so many different stories! Did you eat many veges when you were a kid? Did your mum cook them until they were so soft and mushy that they didn’t look like veges anymore? or did you live in an area where veges were scarce or extremely expensive? Was eating your veges a form of punishment?
I will ask questions about how food makes you feel physically. Do you fart a lot after eating broccoli? Do you feel sick when you have dairy? Does eating lots of sugar make you feel scattered or drowsy? Do you feel bloated after eating a bowl of fruit?
I will also ask you how food makes you feel emotionally? Do you feel guilty after eating chocolate? Do you exercise to ‘burn off’ the extra calories you ate? Do you feel good when you eat ‘good’ foods and bad when you eat ‘bad’ foods?
During an initial consultation I will ask you all these questions and many more. I will also ask you about family history, medications you’re taking, if you have any diagnosed conditions or any recent blood tests I can review. These things help me to get a holistic view of your current state of health, so that I can support you to make positive changes to your habits.
